(Atlantic) The Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department will soon be offering bikes for the public to rent.
Bryant Rasmussen, Parks and Recreation Director, told the Park Board Monday night that he talked to the Police Department and got the green light to use some of the bikes they have had stored in their basement for the public to rent.
Rasmussen said this will be a great amenity to all of the other things they have to offer. Other items the public can rent include cross country skis, hockey gear, bag boards, horseshoes, bocce ball, croquet, discs for disc golf, ladder golf, footballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, pickleball, checkers, chess, tic-tac-toe, and board games. To rent these items, just call the Parks and Recreation Department. Rasmussen said their goal is to constantly increase the number of recreation items the public can use in the city parks.
In other activity, Bryant Rassmussen said they will be putting in some raised beds at Mollett Park that will be used as community gardens. Rasmussen told the Park Board that they have been back and forth about the overall cost to charge to rent the beds. He said they were looking at possibly $35, which the Park Board felt was fair. There will be water access and composting on site, so the fee would cover the rental of the bed and the utilities and tools that will be out there.
Rasmussen said they have ten raised beds, but two will be offered to the Master Gardeners to use for educational purposes.
And, the Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department is looking to start a ‘friends of the park’ group called PALS (Parks Are Locally Special). Bryant Rassmussen said they are kind of piggybacking the idea off of the Friends of Lake Anita and any of the areas that have a group like this.
Rasmussen said they will be holding a meeting on February 4th at 5:30 p.m. at the Sunnyside Park Office for anyone who is interested in becoming a friend of the park
In other news, Rassmussen said ice fishing is allowed at Schildberg Recreation Area, but they do not monitor the ice so it is up to you to test the ice to make sure is thick enough. The Sunnyside Park gates are closed, but the park is still open to sledding and other activities.
