(Avoca) AHSTW wrestlers are getting back to the grind after some time off for the holidays. The Vikings returned to the mat for practice on Monday morning to knock off the rust and any extra weight they may have put on.
Coach Evan McCarthy says senior leadership has been a strength for his team this year. “The guys are doing a pretty good job of showing the younger guys what the expectation is as far as work ethic during practice.” McCarthy says, “It’s been carrying over. Some of our seniors are off to a pretty good start to their season out on the mat. We have one guy that’s still undefeated and a couple others that were able to win conference and win a couple of tournaments so far.
The team finished as the runner up in the Western Iowa Conference Duals on Friday, December 20th. They beat Treynor and state ranked Underwood before falling to Logan-Magnolia in the finals. The very next day brought the Western Iowa Conference Individual Tournament where the team placed 5th. Joel Sampson (132), Denver Pauley (160), and Gavyn Fischer (195) all won WIC titles while Jaedan Rasmussen (152) finished a conference runner-up.
