(Audubon) Audubon boys basketball takes a 1-3 record into their contest with AHSTW on Friday. We’ll have the Wheelers and the Vikings on KSOM.
Audubon has likely taken on two of the top three teams in the Western Iowa Conference already with losses to Tri-Center and Treynor and now they face another strong WIC foe on Friday with AHSTW carrying a 4-0 record.
When asked about his team’s biggest strengths so far, Wheeler coach Coleman Mullenix pointed to defense. They’ve allowed 60.5 points per game, but the three teams that they have lost to are a combined 9-2. “We made some defensive changes at the beginning of the year and are improving and understanding what those changes are from a year go. Defensively we’ve made improvement. It hasn’t looked extremely pretty at times because we’ve had to guard a 6’8″ and 6’10” player our last two games, but we’ve made improvement.”
Audubon has some returning pieces from a team that went 16-7 last year, but almost everyone is in a different role from last season. Marcus Olsen, Skyler Schultes, and Kaiden Smith played and started most of our games last year. Outside of them pretty much everybody else saw no varsity tie last year. As we talked after our Treynor game, outside of Kaiden, everyone is asked to do something more.”
Kaiden Smith leads the team in scoring and rebounding with averages of 11 points and 7 rebounds per game. Marcus Olsen averages 9.5 point and 5 rebounds a night. Skyler Schultes led the team in scoring on Tuesday with 12 points. Coach Mullenix refers to AHSTW as an athletic team and calls Raydden Grobe a really good offensive threat.
