(Avoca) Several local farmers gathered north of Avoca this morning to harvest beans for Duane Carroll, who was injured in a vehicle accident Monday morning.
“My brother Kevin started this with Chad Manz of Cyclone Seed & Chemical,” said Robb Jacobsen. “We found out about the accident on Monday and Tom Carroll called in the afternoon and we definitely said yes we’ll take care of it, so we rallied the troops, all of the neighbors, and we had a huge outpouring of support. We have the Trinity Lutheran Church bringing lunch for the guys here. It’s just been a great come-together feeling in the face of tragedy.”
Jacobsen said the Carroll family has lived up the road from him for years. He described Duane as a humble, shy guy that would do anything for anybody.
“The whole family is a great family and supportive and we just want to come support them today so they can concentrate on recovery and having Duane heal up so they don’t have to worry about this,” said Jacobsen. “We’re going to do the beans today and then probably in a couple of weeks we’re going to do all of this again, we’ll come back and get the corn.”
The group of farmers were harvesting just shy of 200 acres of beans in two locations north of Avoca this morning. There were around six combines, 6 to 8 tractors and grain carts, and 6 to 8 semis that helped out.
“You know everybody is busy, it’s been a late start, it’s been muddy, there have been challenges, but everybody has dropped what they are doing to come help Duane and the family as neighbors. That’s what we do in the farming community,” stated Jacobsen.
