(Atlantic) Atlantic Animal Control Officer Kris Erickson and three Atlantic Police Officers rescued 21-cats and dogs this week from a poor living environment and want them to go to a good home.
“The Atlantic Police Department came to my home and informed me of numerous animals in a house not being cared for,” stated Erickson. “This is a hard-luck situation. So along with three Police Officers, we rescued them.”
Erickson is asking people interested in helping out these animals in any way or who are able to take one home to contact the Shelter at (712) 243-2287 or stop by the Shelter at the corner of Sunnyside Lane and 2nd Street.
“Except for the momma dog and puppies and the kittens, the rest of the cats and dogs are available for adoption,” explained Erickson. “We have a perfectly healthy adult male. And two elderly female dogs needing a retirement type of home. They aren’t going to be great with kids, they can’t for long walks and can’t play ball. They just need somewhere to be comfortable until they’re done.
Right now we can’t take in any more cats,” said Erickson. “We can take some dogs, but no more cats until these are adopted.”
“The cats don’t like to be caged, they want to roam and have a loving environment,” said Erickson. “The longer they’re here the more depressed they become. It’s not that they’re not being cared for, it’s just not a fun and friendly environment, and I wish I could spend all day petting them. We play music for them which helps. We have calming spray and plenty of toys for them to play with. The younger they are the better they do. The older ones are just going to lay there and sleep.”
Erickson is also asking for some items that can be donated. Those items include; dry dog & puppy food, non-clumping cat litter, dry cat & kitten food, air freshener (prefer stuff that you sit out as sprays are not good with animals) collars of all sizes, flea meds & flea spray, calming spray for the cats. Additionally, bleach used for odor control and disinfecting towels, an old heating pad, (we have one pup that isn’t doing as well as the others but cannot find out heating pad so we hold him to warm him up), and cash donations are welcome also. A few of the animals need some mild vet care & the two older dogs need a spa day aka grooming as they are matted and the claws are very overgrown.
