(Guthrie Center) The Guthrie Center City Council voted 3-2 to allow a resident to keep chickens and ducks within city limits.
Laura Wolfe, City Clerk/Administrator says a City Officer received an anonymous complaint of chickens and ducks at 1209 Oak Street. She says historically they send notices to the neighbors within 200 feet of the property line alerting them when this issue would come before the council so they have an opportunity to voice their opinions pro and con. But, ultimately it’s up to the council to make a decision whether or not the chickens will be allowed. In this case, Herbert, Cleveland, and Steensen voted in favor of allowing the chickens. Masters and Thomas voted no. This means the chickens and ducks stay.
In other business; Laura Janning from Region XII appeared in front of the Guthrie Center City Council and discussed a housing Rehab grant application. Wolfe says owner-occupied homes that qualify can receive up to $25,000 to be used for home rehabilitation.
Additionally, the council unanimously approved $16,050 of Local Option Sales Tax money to be used as matching funds for the Parks and Recreation Board’s Guthrie County Community Foundation grant application for resurfacing the tennis and basketball courts and approved just over $51,100.00 for sewer lining and approximately $50,000 for street repair. The Council also approved the second reading of the sidewalk ordinance and set March 12, at 6:30 p.m. as a public hearing for the Fiscal year 2018/2019 budget.
