(Des Moines, IA) — The Riverside Boys Track & Field team set a goal at the beginning of the season — win the team title at the state meet. That goal came to fruition on Saturday as the Bulldogs finished with 51 points, well ahead of 2nd place Van Buren County with 43. Brody Henderson and Owen Fenner clinched it for Riverside when they both scored points in the 1600 and then a 5th place finish in the 4×400 put it away.
Riverside did it in a workmanlike effort with just one state title — the 4×800 relay repeated on Thursday. The Sprint Medley finished 2nd in the first 1A boys event on Saturday. Jaxon Gordon had the fastest time in the 100 hurdles but finished 4th in Saturday’s finals. Dawson Henderson did finish 3rd in the 800 and was 5th in the 3200 on Thursday. Cole Jeppesen placed 5th in the 100 finals on Saturday — Jeppesen also gained one point for the team with an 8th place finish in the long jump.
Nobody, however, could mount a challenge. Iowa Valley pulled to within a half point after the 110 Hurdles finals with two medalists. The Tigers, however, did not have any more events and finished third. Van Buren passed them with a win in the 4×400 and settled for 2nd place.
Riverside now owns the 1A boys running season after winning the cross country team title in the fall and the track and field championship in the spring.
