(Malvern, IA) — Griswold was hoping to compete with a traditional contender in the Corner Conference on Tuesday night but East Mills defended their home court and earned a sweep against the Tigers. The Wolverines won the girls game 42-32 and the boys ran away from Griswold with a 70-49 victory.
The Tiger girls got off to a great start, leading 11-3 but East Mills would find a way to get to the free throw line and Griswold would go cold midway through the quarter — the Wolverines led 12-9 at the end of one quarter, led 19-18 at the half and then pulled away in the second half.
Griswold went 0-19 from three point land and their leading scorer Amanda Houser who averages 16.7 ppg was held scoreless in the first half. Houser would get a couple of three point plays in the third quarter to try and keep the Tigers close but Caitlyn Crouse was too much. The freshman had 6 points in the second quarter and 9 in the third period, all from the paint. She finished with 19 points to lead all scorers while Ava Grindle had 10. Houser would finish with 9 to lead Griswold, Sadie Gohlinghorst and Abby Gohlinghorst each had 7. Griswold falls to 2-2 while East Mills is now 4-1.
The boys game was dominated by the Wolverines. They led 16-2 after the first quarter led by Sheldon Vandenburg’s 10 points in the quarter. After that Jackson Embree took over, hitting shots all over the court with a smooth style of basketball. Embree hit short jumpers in the 2nd quarter then bombed some threes in the third. Embree finished with 26 while Vandenburg added 20.
Griswold was led by Brayden Lockwood with 14 while Zane Johnson hit 4 3’s for 12 points and Bode Wyman added 8. Griswold falls to 2-2 while East Mills is now 3-0.
