(Audubon, IA) – The Audubon Wheelers are having quite a few athletes head down to Des Moines tomorrow for the state track and field meet at Drake Stadium. Just last week, Audubon went into the state-qualifying meet looking to get at least six state-qualifying events and with their persistence, they were able to do just that. Head Coach Tony Konkler was more than pleased with his boys to more than double the number of state qualifiers this season.
Audubon was able to capture a spot in quite a few events. Aaron Olsen will be racing in the 100-meter dash, Ezekiel Konkler will be running in the 800-meter run, and the relay teams in the 4×400-meter, 4×110-meter hurdles, sprint medley, and distance medley. The Wheelers saw that the sprint medley team had a chance to go to the state meet as they broke multiple school records this season. What really came into play was the distance medley as Audubon almost wasn’t going to feature a distance medley team, but after Coach Konkler talked to a few IKM-Manning athletes, he realized that his boys had a chance to make it to the blue oval.
The State Track and Field meet is a unique experience for these athletes. They are competing on a collegiate track at Drake University in front of thousands of fans watching the best of the best high school athletes. This is a huge accomplishment for these athletes to be able to make it to Des Moines to compete with some top talent and hopefully come home with a medal.
When it comes to the state track meet, you have to be mentally prepared for anything that can happen. What helps these athletes are the other local schools that they interact with and compete within the meet itself. Those connections not only help with making friends but also help with making those athletes feel more comfortable in their respective events.
Audubon will be traveling to Des Moines tomorrow to compete at the State Track and Field Meet that starts at 9:00 a.m. and runs through Saturday, May 18th.
