(Des Moines) Traffic fatalities across Iowa through the first quarter of 2024 are significantly lower than one year ago. According to the latest Iowa Department of Transportation 2024 Iowa Traffic Count, as of April 8, 59 people died on Iowa roadways, 20 fewer than at this time one year ago.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper and Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy says it is important to continue working hard behind the wheel to ensure this trend continues.
In January, 14 traffic deaths were reported, 17 in February, 26 in March, and so far, two traffic deaths in the first eight days in April.
During the first quarters of 2022, 64 people died on Iowa roadways, 56 in 2021, 56 in 2020, and 67 in 2019.
To date, nine people have died in motorcycle crashes, one bicycle fatality, seven pedestrians, and three people killed in ATV/UTV accidents.
Twenty-four people died in urban accidents, and so far, 35 people have been killed in crashes in rural areas.
