(Des Moines) Sixty percent of Iowans support letting teachers carry firearms on school grounds. According to the latest Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, 38 percent of the state’s residents oppose it. The poll comes two months after the deadly school shooting in Perry, Iowa, that left one student and the principal dead. A proposal passed by the Iowa House would let teachers carry if they undergo annual training and give legal immunity to teachers in school shootings.
The Iowa House proposal would allow schools to decide who can carry a firearm in the building. Some schools are authorizing teachers and others to have firearms for building security. Even though these individuals have extensive training and are following the law, some insurance companies are considering denying the school coverage for taking steps to protect the students. This division prohibits an insurance company from denying coverage due to legal firearms in the building.
