(Adair Co) Jane Briley, with the Mormon Trails Association, spoke to the Adair County Board of Supervisors this morning about replacing signs along the trail in the County.
Briley explained that in 1968 the national trails system started being developed and the Mormon Trail was one of the main trails. She said it is 1,300 miles long, it goes from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City, Utah and it also includes the Mormon Battalion Trail which is 2,000 miles long, and this trail goes through Adair County.
Briley said in the early 1990’s, landowners in Southern Iowa knew the history the land was on and they started the Iowa Mormon Trails Association.
Briley said a lot of the signs have not been maintained since 1993; some of them are fading and some of them have been stolen. Therefore, Briley asked the Board if the county could help with replacing the 12 signs in the county.
The Supervisors approved helping put up the signs as time allows.
