(Greenfield) Facing back-to-back top ten opponents has not been kind to the Nodaway Valley/O-M football team, but the Wolverines have a chance to get back on track over the next two weeks.
Coach Seth Comly’s squad has 3-3 West Central Valley on Friday night followed by 1-5 Panorama next week. In Class 1A, four teams from each district qualify for the playoffs and these are the three teams battling for the final spot. “I would say with West Central Valley’s win against Panorama last week, most definitely. That fourth spot is coming down to us three and I think whoever wins this game has the inside track to getting that fourth spot. Obviously you have to play the games out, but I would say it has a little bit of implication.”
Prior to joining Nodaway Valley/O-M, Comly had been an assistant at West Central Valley and his familiarity with the Wildcats may be an advantage. “A lot of their stuff looks pretty similar and that helps out with the familiarity with both their kids and their schemes.”
Nodaway Valley/O-M has been outscored 143-6 over the past few weeks and a ready to turn it around. “They are hungry. The last three games we’ve been kind of playing out of sorts and playing some really tough teams. I feel like we got away from our basics. I think these guys are hungry and they are totally motivated going into this week especially because the next two weeks we’ll be playing opponents that are fairly close to us geographically.”
Comly is hopeful having faced the two district leaders in ACGC and Van Meter will benefit his squad in the long run. “Any time you play a tough opponent and basically the gold standard in Class 1A the past couple of years you are going to get better. I think our guys definitely handed it well. I think we are coming out of these last two weeks a much better football team.”
Comly says stopping the run will be the biggest key. The last two weeks the Wolverine defense has allowed 600 rushing yards and 11 TD’s.
