(Greenfield) Nodaway Valley/O-M plays their final non-district game of the season on Friday night when they oppose Red Oak. Both teams are 1-1.
Wolverine head coach Seth Comly is optimistic about his team’s chances in Week 3. “Going by what we’ve seen on film this team matches up pretty similar to us. They have some good athletes and they have pretty good size up front, but I like our chances.”
The Tigers are led by running back Riley Fouts who had 195 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries last week in a 20-0 win against West Central Valley. “He’s a scrapper. He runs hard. We have to really stop him. They want to run the ball quite a bit. When they put it in the air we have to make it tough for them to complete passes and get pressure on their quarterback.”
Nodaway Valley/O-M forced five turnovers in Week 2, but they also turned the ball over themselves four times. “We have to fix little mistakes. Too many penalties and we have to really take care of the ball. We turned it over five times and won the turnover margin, but when you take the ball away and give it right back it kind of defeats the purpose.”
Despite a loss last week, Comly feels his team is still making progress. One of the biggest areas of growth has been on offense. Comly explains the plan is to get it in the hands of their best athletes and let them make plays. “We are going to get the ball out quick in space. Caelen DeVault, Boston DeVault, Tyson Ross, and Chase Walker can all make plays and when you have a guy like Caelen DeVault out there you swing it to him as much as possible so he can go out and do what he does best.”
Nathan Russell completed 30/51 passes for 365 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Caelen DeVault caught 13 balls for 167 yards and a score. Boston DeVault had 7 catches for 71 yards and 2 TD’s. Tyson Ross had 96 yards on 7 catches with 1 touchdown.
Defensively last week Adam Ayase posted 9.5 tackles, Caelen DeVault had 8, and Avery Phillippi 7. They held Shenandoah to 14 yards rushing, but gave up 337 through the air.
