(Atlantic) Atlantic outscored Denison-Schleswig 8-4 in the fifth set and defeated the Monarchs 3-2 in Hawkeye Ten Conference Volleyball on Tuesday night.
The Trojans lost the first set 25-22, won the next two 25-19, 25-14, fell short in the fourth set 25-18 and battled to a 15-12 win in the rally set to win the match 3-2.
The Trojans trailed 9-7 in the final set when Atlantic Head Coach Michelle Blake called a timeout. “I called a timeout to settle us down because I knew we were getting to that tipping point,” said Blake. “I wanted to make sure we got control of the game. I told them I will not lose this game being scared and I will not lose this game by being timid. If we’re going to lose this game we’re going out playing 100-percent and playing aggressive. Because there were some moments when we were stopping on a hit, and that’s playing not to lose-and not to win-that stuck with them and they rolled that into the win.”
The Trojans picked up their 10th win of the season and third conference victory of the season.
“It’s been five years since an Atlantic volleyball team reached double-digit wins, and they did it tonight,” said Blake. “It’s all of those 6:00 a.m. Friday practices, it’s coming in all summer. We had our backs against the wall at the beginning of the season. We were shut down for the first two weeks and they came in ready to go.”
Atlantic moves to 10-18 on the season. Denison-Schleswig is now 9-10.
