(Underwood, IA) — First place is on the line in the Western Iowa Conference baseball standings tonight as Treynor visits Underwood, coverage on KSOM.
Both teams are 6-0 in the WIC; Underwood did not play last night — they lost their first game of the season on Saturday to MOC Floyd Valley 3-0 but beat Spencer 7-2. The Eagles are hitting .369 as a team and have an ERA of 2.25. Sophomore Blake Brensel will get the start tonight who is 2-0 with a 3.97 ERA — he threw 6 1/3 innings to get the win against Tri Center last Monday. Underwood Head Coach Andy Vanfossan says he is learning about the art of pitching every time he takes the mound
Offensively, Sophomore Maddox Mechaelsen leads the team hitting .481 with 7 RBI; Brensel has driven in 17 runs to lead the Eagles and is hitting .385; Senior Ryker Adair is batting .448 with 5 RBI. Vanfossan knows that Treynor can swing the bats too
Treynor is coming off a crazy 15-12 win over Tri Center last night — the Cardinals built an 8-0 lead and the Trojans came back to tie it 9-9. Treynor went back up 15-9 and Tri Center’s rally in the top of the 7th came up short. Treynor Head Coach Billy Sanders says it was a long game
The Cardinals will throw Freshman Cameron Lane tonight who won his first start against Missouri Valley, allowing one unearned run on 3 hits, striking out two. Treynor has a team ERA of 1.79 and a team batting average of .309. Junior Reece Vorthman leads the bats, hitting .500 with 3 RBI. Junior Riley Lauver is also hitting .500 with 2 doubles, 2 triples and 8 RBI.
Sanders says Underwood is a hard team to beat because they do not make many mistakes
Treynor is 6-2 overall; Underwood 8-1; game time tonight is at 7:30 pm, coverage on KSOM 96.5 FM and audio at westerniowatoday.com
