BOYS NOTES
One Last Trip Around The Track, One Last Victory For Nauman
Western Dubuque’s Quentin Nauman celebrated one last victory on his final turn around the Drake Stadium Blue Oval as a high school athlete. Nauman capped an outstanding high school career by winning Class 3A 1600 – his 10th state championship. Add in seven Drake Relays titles and two cross country championships, no high school boy in Iowa has collected more gold in running events across the three state’s three major competitions.
Four Events, Four Titles For Norwalk Star
The University of South Dakota got a good one when it signed Norwalk’s Kaiden Kunze. Kunze capped his high school career by sweeping the sprint triple in the Class 4A and adding a title in the long jump for good measure. He topped things off by winning the 100 and 200 in today’s session. He also claimed two titles at the Drake Relays last month, winning the long jump and setting a record in the 400.
Van Buren’s Lincoln Bainbridge also had a big meet in helping his team finish second in the Class 1A team standings. He won the 400 and 800 and anchored victories in the 4×400 and distance medley relays.
Rogne Gets Second Title With Late Sprint
After running 1550 meters, Knute Rogne of Lake Mills still had enough left to win a sprint to the finish. Rogne outran South Winneshiek’s Hugh Conway to get the victory in the Class 1A 1600 for his second championship of the weekend. The Lake Mills senior was timed in 4:23.17. Conway, a sophomore, finished in 4:23.57. Rogne won the 3200 on Thursday.
Taking It Down Another Notch
A West Des Moines Valley quartet made a ground-breaking run in winning the Class 4A 4×100 relay. The Tigers became the first foursome to go under 41 seconds in the event, running 40.84 with a team of Greg Sayee, Trent Grevengoed, Miciah LeLaCheur and Joseph Alexander. The previous fastest time in Iowa had been 41.18 by Ankeny Centennial at last year’s state meet. Valley’s best had been 41.52 at a meet at Johnston on April 14.
He’s Got Three Relay Wins In Three Different Classes
Kolby Hodnefield earned his third state championship in a 4×400 relay when he anchored Clear Lake’s victory – and they’ve come in three different classes. This one came in Class 3A and the Lions’ time of 3:16.30 was a meet record. He anchored South Hamilton’s 4×400 unit to the Class 1A title as a freshman in 2023 and took South Hamilton to the 2A crown in that event as a sophomore in 2024. Hodnefield also won the 400 in this year’s meet and ran on the winning 4×100 relay team to finish his career with eight state titles.
Historic Win For Alburnett
A victory in the final event of the meet, the 4×400 relay, helped Alburnett, secure a piece of history for the school. The Pirates finished with 66 points in the Class 2A competition to win their first team championship in track. They also won the 4×800 relay and got a victory from Caiden Bueckers in the 800. Grundy Center was second with 56 points.
Balance Carries Riverside To First Title
Riverside of Oakland won only one event but scored in nine others and that balance was enough to give the Bulldogs their first state championship in track. They finished with 51 points to claim the Class 1A crown – eight more than Van Buren. Riverside won the 4×800 relay and finished second in the sprint medley.
Dunham Stuns Nauman In The 800
Western Dubuque’s Quentin Nauman has enjoyed incredible success on the Drake Stadium Blue Oval and looked to be headed to a third straight title in the Class 3A 800. Pella’s Canaan Dunham had other ideas. Dunham overtook the Western Dubuque star as they were coming out of the final turn and beat him to the finish to win the race in a personal best 1:50.61, the first time he had ever defeated Nauman at the state meet. Dunham, running a 54.53 final 400, nearly erased four seconds off his season best of 1:54.95. Nauman, who had won four titles in each of past two state meets and was the 3200 champion on Thursday, finished in a season-best 1:51.22 for second place with a 54.91 last lap.. It was the first individual title for Dunham, who anchored Pella to a victory in the 4×800 relay last year. Dunham’s winning time in the 800 is seventh on the state’s all-time list. Nauman is the all-time leader at 1:49.41.
Easy Repeat For Grundy Center
With two runners back from last year’s championship quartet, Grundy Center ran away with another title in the Class 2A sprint medley relay. Judd Jirovsky ran 200-meter leg and Brayden Davie finished up with the 400 as the Spartans ran 1:31.47 to set a meet record. Runner-up Southeast Valley was nearly 2 seconds back in 1:33.82. It’s second championship of the meet for Davie, who won the 400 on Thursday. Grundy Center also got a title from Emerson Vokes in the 3200 on Thursday.
Sophomore Spurs Linn-Mar Upset
Sophomore Blake Swisher’s strong anchor helped Linn-Mar take down the two favorites in the Class 4A sprint medley relay. Swisher got the baton for his 400-meter carry in a good spot and held off Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Drew Bennis and Marcus Tomlyanovich of Cedar Falls to give his team the victory in 1:30.51, which puts the Lions at No. 8 on the state’s all-time list. Prairie, which came in at No. 7 all-time, finished second in 1:30.58. Cedar Falls, which won the event the past two years and had run the sixth-best time in state history this spring, was third in 1:30.87.
Hurrying Over The Hurdles
Those shuttle hurdle relay teams just keep getting faster and faster. Witness the latest Class 4A championship race. The top two teams both ran faster than the previous all-time best and the third-place finisher, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, exceeded its previous best and still dropped on the state’s all-time list. Iowa City West won in 55.39, the fastest time ever. Waukee Northwest was second in 55.52, which is now No. 2 on the all-time list. Kennedy finished in 55.98 and dropped from second to third on the all-time list. West was the previous all-time leader at 55.82.
Fast At Drake, Even Faster Today
Ankeny’s Hayden Carlson was impressive in winning the 110 hurdles at the Drake Relays last month. He was even faster today in winning the Class 4A championship. In fact, it’s the fastest an Iowa high school athlete has ever run the event. Carlson ran 13.52 to dislodge Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Quinton Alexander from the top of the state’s all-time list. Alexander ran 13.55 at the Drake Relays last year and held the previous state meet record at 13.65.
GIRLS NOTES
Northwest Dominates Again In Class 4A
Waukee Northwest’s runners set one record after another during the meet and they had one more when it was all over. The Wolves piled up a record 150.5 points in winning their fourth Class 4A team title in the last five years. They got points in all 19 events and won five of the seven relays, setting meet records in all five. Cedar Falls was second with 76.5 points and Ankeny took third with 67.
Northwest also won titles in 2022, 2023 and 2025 – all under coach Ben Duea. When Pleasant Valley interrupted the run 2024, Northwest finished second.
Swift Trio Leads Pella Christian
The sprint trio of Rachel Kacmarynski, Bailey Vos and Meredith Van Wyk led Pella Christian to its second straight Class 2A team championship. With coach Keith Anderson able to mix and match, the Eagles won the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400 and sprint medley relays while getting individual titles from Kacmarynski in the 100 and 200 and Vos in the 400. The team’s relay streaks now stand at two straight in the 4×1, three straight in the 4×2, 4×4 and sprint med. Pella Christian finished with 78 points, Mid-Prairie had 68 and Spirit Lake 53.
Kacmarynski, a junior, is a perfect 12-for-12 in her career. She has competed in 12 races at state and finished first in all 12. Vos and Van Wyk are seniors both finished with careers with 11 state championships.
Almost Perfect
Waukee Northwest’s Katie Willits had a near-perfect day in her final state high school meet. Willits won the Class 4A 100 and 200, ran on the shuttle hurdle relay team that recorded the state’s fastest time ever and finished second in the 100 hurdles. Her winning time in the 200, 23.70, ranks second on the state’s all-time list and it took the state’s all-time best time by West Des Moines Valley’s Morgan Karr to beat her on the hurdles.
Denton Does It Again In 1,500
Council Bluffs St. Albert’s Lili Denton closed out her high school career in fitting fashion – with another victory in a distance race. Denton won the Class 1A 1500 for the second straight year to finish with seven state championships before heading off to the University of Texas. She also won two cross country titles. In 16 races at the state meet, she never finished lower than fifth. She also won the 800 this year and anchored a victory in the distance medley relay.
Moeller Makes Her Mark
Mount Vernon’s Evelyn Moeller made a nice run through the distance triple in Class 3A and came away with two meet records to boot. Moeller started the day by winning the 800 in 2:11.46, then ran 4:28.07 to break Paityn Noe’s record in the 1500. She also broke Noe’s record in the 3000 on the Thursday when she ran 9:27.31, which is No. 4 on the state’s all-time list. Moeller is a junior so she’ll have a chance to return next year to collect more gold on the Blue Oval.
That Was Some Kind Of Hurdling
The fastest shuttle hurdle race ever run ended with another Class 4A state championship for Waukee Northwest. Northwest blazed to a 58.61-second clocking, the first foursome to run under 59, to win for the second straight year. Runner-up West Des Moines Valley also eclipsed the previous all-time mark, finishing in 58.92. And the third-place team, Waukee, goes in at No. 5 on the all-time list at 1:00.51. Northwest had established the previous all-time best of 59.37 at the Drake Relays last month. Valley came into the final after setting the meet record of 1:00.11 in Thursday’s preliminaries. Needless to say, it didn’t last long.
A Significant First For Mount Ayr
Mount Ayr’s first state championship in a relay came with a bonus. The Raiders won the Class 1A sprint medley relay in 1:47.80, which took down the meet record of 1:48.80 that Hudson set 11 years ago. It was Mount Ayr’s first title in any event since Melissa Eighmy won the 400 hurdles in 1998. Second-place finisher Edgewood-Colesburg also came in under the old record, finishing in 1:48.48.
Ankeny Topples Northwest In Sprint Medley
Ankeny’s Morgan Fisher ran down Logan Vogt of Waukee Northwest to give the Hawkettes a victory over the defending champs in the Class 4A sprint medley relay. And they did it with a time that set a meet record. Ankeny finished in 1:43.06, eclipsing the record of 1:43.64 that Linn-Mar set in 2018. Northwest had set an all-time best of 1:42.78 in the event two weeks ago, but had to settle for second place in 1:43.30. Fisher and Ankeny’s No. 2 runner, Lilly Buckley, ran on the distance medley relay unit that raced to an all-time best of 3:55.44 on Friday.
Big Close Means Title For Moeller
A furious finish by Mount Vernon’s Evelyn Moeller gave her the narrowest of victories in the Class 3A 800. Moeller came from well back over the final 150 meters and nipped freshman Avery Fedler of Mount Pleasant as they crossed the finish line to win in 2:11.46. Fedler, who had led throughout the race, was timed in 2:11.47. Sioux Center’s Audrina Jones also closed fast to finish third in 2:12.23. It was the second title of the week for Moeller, who set a meet record in winning the 3000 on Thursday.
We’ve Seen This Before
City rivals Makenna Madetzke and Rebecca Flick went 1-2 in the 800 at the Drake Relays last month and now they’ve done it again at the state meet. Madetzke, from Ankeny High, won the Class 4A race in 2:09.50. Flick, from Ankeny Centennial, took second in 2:10.77. For Madetzke, it’s victory No. 2 of the week. She anchored Ankeny to an all-time best in the distance medley relay on Friday.
This Karr Was Humming Along
Morgan Karr of West Des Moines Valley was one smooth operator in winning the Class 4A 100 hurdles. So smooth that she replaced former teammate Emma Havighurst as the all-time leader in the event. Karr ran 13.53, bettering the 13.62 that Havighurst put up last year as the meet record and all-time best. Waukee Northwest’s Katie Willits finished second in 13.70, which puts her at No. 3 on the all-time list. Both will join Havighurst at Iowa State next year.
