(Atlantic, IA) — All-State softball selections came out yesterday and three players for Atlantic were honored, two of them Sophomores.
Catcher Lila Wiederstein was named First Team All State and it was no surprise. Wiederstein was tied for 5th in Class 3A in batting average, hitting .556. She also had 48 RBI which was 5th in 3A and had 4 HR, 11 doubles, 4 triples, 17 stolen bases, had an on base percentage of .592, which was 7th in 3A, and a slugging percentage of .785. She also only struck out 6 times all season. Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann says her eye popping offensive numbers overshadow her strong defense behind the plate
Another Sophomore Zoey Kirchoff was named 3rd team All State. The Shortstop hit .429, 9 HR, 57 RBI, scored 33 runs. She put the ball play more times than not, walking 11 times but only had 10 strikeouts. Kirchoff had an on base percentage of .472 but more than anything was a stalwart at shortstop where she committed only seven errors
Pitcher Riley Wood was the other Trojan honored by the Iowa Coaches — the Senior was 2nd team All State selection. Wood was a dependable starter and workhorse for Atlantic, 15-8, 3.57 ERA with 107 strikeouts and opponents hit only .227 against her. She also swung a good bat, hitting .403, 2 HR, 33 RBI and was second behind Wiederstein with 43 runs scored. Hinzmann says Wood was always ready to lead Atlantic in the big games
Overall, Hinzmann is excited what Wiederstein and Kirchoff will do to lead the team that went 27-13 this past season
Complete interview with Coach Terry Hinzmann will be on Saturday morning on Atlantic Sports Saturday at 9am on KSOM.
