(Area) Two candidates are running for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional Democratic nomination in Iowa’s. Melissa Vine and Lanon Baccam are vying to run in the November election.
Vine is a busy woman, licensed mental health counselor, domestic violence survivor, and single mother of four boys. She is currently the Director of a non-profit called The Beacon, which provides housing and services to women recovering from trauma in Des Moines.
Lanon Baccam is a combat veteran, public servant, and son of rural Iowa. His parents came to the United States from Laos in 1980. He was born and raised in Mount Pleasant and enlisted in the Io National Guard at age 17. He served as the Deputy Undersecretary at the USDA before resigning to run for Congress. In 2020, he was appointed Deputy State Director for President Biden’s campaign in Iowa.
U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn, a first-term Republican, currently holds Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District seat. He defeated Democratic incumbent Cindy Axne in the 2022 midterm election in which Iowa Republicans won big, winning control of the entire congressional delegation and all but one statewide elected position. Nunn is running unopposed in the Republican Primary.
