(Des Moines) Des Moines experienced record-breaking heat this weekend, with temperatures reaching 88 degrees Fahrenheit, surpassing the previous record of 87 degrees set in 2006. The National Weather Service Des Moines confirmed the new record, which was announced on X. However, the warm weather also brings concerns about fire hazards, prompting a fire weather watch for the state’s northern half. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to follow the heat, potentially bringing hail, high winds, and tornadoes Monday night into Tuesday.
Temperatures are expected to reach 83 degrees in southwest Iowa today, followed by a cool down late in the week. Tuesday’s high is expected to reach 72 degrees; Wednesday, 54 the high on Thursday, with a low of 33 degrees; and 53 Friday, with a low temperature of 31 degrees.
The average high temperature for this time of year is 61 degrees, and the average low is 38 degrees.
