(Indianapolis, IN) – For the incoming season, there are a few rule changes that have been updated by the NFHS, which regulates the incoming and outgoing rules nationwide. Here are some of the rule changes that you can expect when watching basketball games around Iowa this season.
High school teams will shoot two free throws for fouls on the floor when there is a bonus. This eliminates the former rule where there was a bonus and a double bonus. So now every time they enter the bonus that athlete will be shooting two free throws. With that rule, the new bonus will be activated when an opposing team reaches five fouls in each quarter. The fouls will then reset after each quarter. This will be common to what you see in women’s college basketball rules for the past few seasons.
The rules for front-court violations have also changed. When the ball becomes dead, and the team is in the offensive team’s frontcourt, the throw-in will then be in just one of four designated spots. The only exception is when the defensive team causes the ball out of bounds, the throw-in spot will be where that ball went out of bounds.
A shot clock operator must also now have an official place at the scorer’s table as Iowa will continue to use the 35-second shot clock. Players will now also have rules applying to undershirts as well, home teams are able to wear a single solid color or solid black for visiting teams. The color used to have to match exactly with the uniform color, but can now be a black undershirt. Last but not least, a player can step out of bounds and return to the court if that player gains no advantage. That means that a player cannot touch the ball immediately after coming from out of bounds.
