(Exira) Exira-EHK hosts Coon Rapids-Bayard in Week 8. Both teams are 3-4 on the season.
While Exira-EHK’s early season playoff chances have dimmed, they will look to put a strong foot forward on senior night. “I just want our kids to enjoy the moment. For seniors it’s the last time they get to play on the ‘Top of the Hill’ and I feel that’s pretty special.” Spartan coach Tom Petersen says, “I want them to enjoy this week. It’s still a football game, it’s a Friday night. You don’t get many of these.”
Exira-EHK beat Boyer Valley 57-7 last Friday night. “I thought last week the kids really did a good job of blocking up front. We were able to run the football which opened some things up in the passing game. I was pretty happy with how we ran the ball. Defensively everybody was flying to the football. We changed a few things and the kids were able to carry every out. I’ve been pretty happy with that.”
Coach Petersen describes Coon Rapids-Bayard as a well balanced team. throws a good ball. “I know they’ve been banged up, kind of like we have been, but I expect all of them to play. Lance Clayburg is a beast back there running the football. We have to make sure that we do a good job of trying to contain him as much as we can. The quarterback Wyatt Oswald throws a good ball. Then they bring in a freshman Cal Heydon that can throw it and he’s very good at what he does. They are physical up front and have some weapons. Very athletic. I know our kids have their work cut out for them.”
Trey Petersen was involved in six TD’s a week ago. The senior quarterback went 9/12 through the air for 175 yards and ran the ball 16 times for 123 yards. Cash Emgarten and Derrek Kommes each tallied four receptions. Emgarten finished with 113 yards and two scores. Kommes had 54 yards receiving and a touchdown along with two interceptions, one of which he returned for a score.
Petersen this season has 1,978 yards from scrimmage and 27 offensive touchdowns. Last week he surpassed 4,000 career passing yards and 6,000 career yards from scrimmage. He has 4,018 passing yards, 1,668 rushing yards, and 526 receiving yards with 74 offensive touchdowns.
