(Anita) CAM graduate Marissa Spieker will play college softball for Southwestern Community College in Creston.
Spieker’s recruitment came about late in the process. “I wasn’t too sold on playing college sports. People had asked me if I was going to and I told them no, but my father just kind of pushed it along. He contacted Coach Jensen and then Coach Jensen contacted me and we met up and I really liked him. He showed me the facilities and it was great, so I signed.”
She’s excited to play for head coach Danny Jensen. The former Murray softball coach took over the SWCC program in 2021 after over 40 years in the high school ranks. “When I met with him he had spoke about how he’s a family coach. We’ll get all the breaks and he wants us to spend time with our family. When I talked to him he just seemed like a very reasonable person and wasn’t all about the sports and winning. Of course he wants to win, but he wants you to have fun and make memories.”
Spieker also competed in Volleyball, Basketball, and Track & Field, but Softball is the one she’s chosen to continue at the next level. “Over the past couple of years I have really fallen to love the sport. My first three years of high school softball I played outfield and it wasn’t my favorite position so softball wasn’t my favorite. My junior softball season I started catching again and it just made me fall in love with the sport all over again.”
Spieker hit four home runs during her senior year. She was named Honorable Mention All State by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.
