(Avoca) AHSTW is enjoying one of their best seasons in school history. The Vikings have raced out to a 15-0 start and are ranked in the top five in Class 1A.
AHSTW is averaging 69.3 points per game. We’ll have their contest against Logan-Magnolia on the air Friday on KSOM. One of the big areas of improvement is the team’s half court offense when they aren’t able to get points off of a fast break. “We are still a work in progress.” Harris says, “Things are getting cleaner and they are getting crisper. They are doing a great job transitioning from transition to a half court set.”
The team is coming off of their 2nd highest offensive output of the season when they beat Missouri Valley 82-48 on Tuesday. Head coach GG Harris admits the outside shooting has picked up. “We are shooting the ball at a really high clip, especially from behind the arc.” Harris points out, “Credit to the kids. They are putting the time in. We are getting open looks.”
AHSTW won 67-46 when these team’s played earlier, but coach Harris feels that they were tested by the Panthers. “You can’t teach height.” The defense is anchored by 6’8″ Tru Melby. “That always poses a problem. They are a physical team. They really gave us everything they had. We struggled with them at their place. They are going to come down here and make us earn everything.”
This kicks off quite a stretch for the Vikings to close out the regular season. They’ll have Logan-Magnolia on Friday, Exira-EHK Saturday, Grand View Christian on Monday, and Treynor on Thursday along with Tri-Center and Denison-Schleswig the following week. “You want to be playing your best basketball at the end of the end of the season and in order to be the best you have to play the best. We are really excited for the opportunity to play really good competition. We know we have to take care of business with Logan and EH-K and then be able to finish on the road at Tri-Center and Denison. We feel we have a really solid schedule that’s putting us in position to be successful.”
We’ll have both games from Avoca on the radio Friday night. The girls tip at 6:00 and the boys will follow.
