(Harlan) A big second quarter vaulted Harlan past Atlantic 64-34 in a girl’s high school basketball game on Monday night at Harlan.
Raegen Wicks led Harlan with 23-points, and Claire Schmitz added 20. Paytn Harter led Atlantic with 12, and Jada Jensen finished the game in double figures with 11.
The Trojans jumped out to a 12-9 lead in the first quarter. Harter scored seven, Jensen three, and Aubrey Guyer added two. Raegen Wicks kept Harlan close with seven first-quarter points, and Schmitz accounted for the other basket.
The Cyclones found their rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring the Trojans 22-4, and raced to a 31-16 lead at the break. In the second quarter, Wicks’ bucket leapfrogged the home team to a 15-14 advantage and never trailed again. Claire Schmitz poured in ten points in the second quarter and dominated the glass. The Cyclones kept their foot on the gas in the second half, outscoring the visitors 17-9 and 16-9 to seal the win.
Seven other players scored for the Cyclones. Caitlyn Leinen finished with six points; Ava Monson, 4, Hannah Sonderman and Aubrey Schwieso, 3, and Shelby Sisson, Erica Rust, and Savannah Christensen scored two points.
Five other players scored for the Trojans. Aubrey Guyer, 3, Aspen Niklasen, Malena Woodward, and Jade Harter scored two points.
The Cyclones extend its’ record to 9-4 and host Carroll High on Thursday.
