(Greenfield) Avery Phillippi’s 24 first half points got Nodaway Valley off to their hottest start of the year and the Wolverines rolled to an 83-42 home win over East Union on Thursday. The team came in averaging 47.1 points per game and exceeded that by halftime.
Phillippi scored 12 in the first quarter and 12 more in the 2nd as the Wolverines led East Union 24-11 after one quarter and 54-23 at the break. Phillippi did most of his scoring on the inside, but also hit a three-pointer and knocked in 3/4 free-throws in the big first half. Boston DeVault added 17 on the night and Dawson Nelson scored 15. Nelson knocked in three 3-pointers. Nodaway Valley, which came out on top in just one of their first nine games, has won back-to-back contests.
After the game Nodaway Valley coach Jeremy Blake stated, “We really got after it with the press, making sure we were communicating where their guys were at and picking up guys.” Blake was glad to see Phillippi break out with a big game, “We’ve done a good job all year of feeding the hot hand. The unselfishness of the team has been good to see. We just kept feeding him and feeding him.”
East Union was led by Cale Eklund’s 17 points and Seth Hudson scored 12. The Eagles move to 1-10 on the year.
