(Atlantic) The budget was a key topic at the Cass County Board of Supervisors this morning.
Supervisors Chairman Steve Baier said they attended the legislative meeting with Senator Tom Shipley and Representative Tom Moore in Marne recently and he said the legislature is aware that there are some issues.
One issue they are dealing with is the “Back the Blue Act”. The language states, “In setting the salary of the county sheriff, the county compensation board shall consider setting set the sheriff’s salary so that it is comparable to salaries paid to professional law enforcement administrators and command officers of the state patrol, the division of criminal investigation of the department of public safety, and city police agencies in this state chiefs employed by cities of similar population to the population of the county. The county compensation board shall prepare a compensation schedule for the elective county officers for the succeeding fiscal year.”

Cass County Sheriff’s Darby McLaren said looking at what the Back the Blue law did and what other people are paying their Deputies and Sheriff’s, Cass County is behind.
In other news, Cass County Engineer Trent Wolken said the bridge project on 700th Street started Monday. He said it’s a wood bridge and they are replacing the beams and deck.
