(Fort Dodge) South Winneshiek outdid Logan-Magnolia 104-121 for a Class 1A Girls Cross Country State Championship on Saturday. The Panthers had two individuals earn medals on their way to another team trophy.
Freshman Madison Sporrer ran 5th and senior Courtney Sporrer earned 11th. Greylan Hornbeck ran 54th for the Panthers and Mariah Nolting was 70th. Other varsity runners included Haedyn Hall 75th, Mya Moss 97th, and Kiera Hochstein 125th.
Woodbine was 10th in the team scoring with 232, followed by Earlham in 11th with 235. St. Albert, ACGC, and Central Decatur were 14th, 15th, and 16th in the team scoring.
The Chargers had a total of 267, led by Ava Campbell’s 27th place run. She turned in a time of 21:07. Hayden Coffman was 49th in 21:39. Adalyn Benson ran 82nd, Paige Van Meter 128th, Kiersten Knobbe 132nd, and Katelyn Schafer 133rd.
Other immediate coverage area participants in the 1A girls race were Audubon’s Stefi Beisswenger, Riverside’s Becca Cody, and AHSTW’s Rylie Knop. Beisswenger capped of a great freshman season with a strong finish in Fort Dodge. She was 18th in a time of 20:29. Sophomore Becca Cody was 84th for Riverside in 22:33. Knop, a sophomore in her first year out for cross country at AHSTW, ran 22:19 to place 72nd.
In Class 2A, individual champion Danielle Hostetler led Mid-Prairie Wellman to a team title. Van Meter was 7th with 210 points and Clarinda finished 8th with 221. DM Christian tallied 306 points and placed 14th. Notable finishes for Class 2A individuals from the area included Clare Kelly, of Van Meter, running 10th, Clarinda’s Mayson Hartley placing 11th, and Van Meter’s Mary Kelly 15th.
