(Area) Iowa’s Bow Hunting season will open on October 1st.
Tree stands are being hung and trail cameras are being checked in preparation for the season. Bow hunters get a big window of opportunity to harvest a deer before the first shotgun season opens in December. “Bow hunters get a lot of time in the field basically to themselves. That bow season opens every October 1st and runs right up against the shotgun deer season which this year is December 3rd. So from October 1st to December 3rd the bow hunters will be in the field”.
Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR identifies two key factors that lead to an ample population of deer for hunters. “That combination of abundant food with a climate that’s favorable for deer allows the deer to thrive in Iowa. Most of our does have twin fawns and 8-12% of the adult doe population will actually have triplets. That’s a sign of excellent nutrition and good habitat.”
In addition to the start of the bow season on Friday, the youth season remains open through October 3rd.
