(Griswold) Nine straight wins to start the season for the Griswold softball team. The Tigers are averaging 10.5 runs per game and allowing just a shade over two. The nine straight wins is the program’s longest streak in at least 15 seasons.
Griswold coach Jody Rossell says they’ve focused on the little things, been prepared day-in day-out, and have taken things one game at a time. “One really big key to our success is we have a lot of girls that have developed a lot of love for the game through their younger years playing WIGSL. That love has driven them to put in the work on their own in the offseason and that’s made a huge difference.”
Being 9-0 wasn’t necessarily somewhere they’d assumed they would be. “I’m not sure if that was a goal. We knew we’d have what it would take to be successful and we just wanted to go out and play our best game every night. We want to play consistently. Our goal is to play the same night in and night out regardless of the opponent and play up to our ability regardless of who the opponent is and that’s what we’ve been focusing on.”
Karly Millikan is 6-0 with a 0.74 ERA and Brenna Rossell is 2-0 with an ERA of 3.09. “They each have their own strength and style. The best part is how team minded they are and they are willing to play any role. That’s been the big difference for us.”
Anna Kelley, McKenna Wiechman, and Dakota Reynolds are all hitting .400 or better. Five others are hitting above .285. “Throughout our whole batting order there’s anybody that come through with a double or a big RBI single. That’s great to have as a coach and the girls have talked about how that helps them individually. They know when they go up to bat it’s not all on their shoulders.”
The Tigers host East Union on Wednesday, travel to Nodaway Valley on Thursday, and match up with Essex on Friday. We’ll have the Nodaway Valley game on 96.5 FM KSOM.
