(Anita) Colby Rich is leading the state in home runs he’s not alone on the list of CAM Cougar power hitters. The 10th ranked team in Class 1A by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association has had three different players touch ’em all this season for a team total of nine home runs.
Rich has driven six out of the park and boasts a .629 average with 29 RBI. Lane Spieker owns two home runs, three triples, five doubles, and 16 RBI. Cade Ticknor got in on the long ball fun with his first home run of the season on Monday night. Joe Kauffman has been another strong bat in the CAM lineup with a .500 average and 12 RBI. “They don’t get cheated and they don’t swing at bad pitches.” Coach Dan Daugherty says, “I think that’s the biggest asset they have. They won’t chase anything bad. They’ll wait for their pitch and when they get it they don’t miss it.”
The team is hitting .355 and averages 11.5 runs per game. They are 9-1. Coach Dan Daugherty says they are happy with where they are at, but are still making too many errors, walking too many batters, and striking out too much at the plate.
CAM had several holdovers from last year’s 15-3 team plus a few of the new starters have made quick progress. “Yeah they really have. They are getting better each game and that’s what we want so by the end of the season they aren’t inexperienced anymore.”
CAM takes on Exira-EHK in a matchup that will air on KSOM Wednesday evening. It’ll be a softball/baseball doubleheader from Anita.
