Maxine J. Umbaugh, age 92, of Adair, IA, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at The New Homestead Nursing Home in Guthrie Center, IA.
Maxine was born February 2, 1929, in Casey, IA. She was the daughter to John and Florence (Hafner) Martin. She grew up in Adair County where she attended rural schools. She then furthered her education at Simpson College obtaining a teaching degree. Maxine taught at a one-room country school for many years.
On August 23, 1959, in the Casey Methodist Church, she married Phillip Alexander Umbaugh. Together they raised two sons, William and John. They farmed for forty-six years south of Adair, and she continued to live on the farm until March 1, 2021.
She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, and the Linden Chapter Order of the Easter Star. Maxine enjoyed her sewing group, spending time with her grandkids, and being involved in many church activities. She was a devout caretaker for her husband Phillip till his passing, and of the farm ground she owned with her sons.
She is survived by her two sons, William Umbaugh and his wife Gretchen of Adair, and John Umbaugh also of Adair; and her two grandsons, Alex and Ward.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Phillip; her parents, John and Florence; and sister, Evelyn Martin.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., with the Linden Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star Service and a funeral service starting at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2021, at the Adair United Methodist Church with Pastor Jenny Knutter officiating. Following the funeral service, a committal will take place at Eureka Center Cemetery, south of Adair, IA.
Memorials may be directed to the family, and will be designated at a later time in memory of Maxine.
