(Audubon) The Audubon girls take a six game win streak into postseason play. The Wheeler girls open the regional tournament Thursday night by hosting East Union.
Audubon is 14-7 overall. They haven’t lost since dropping a 50-36 contest to a ranked Underwood team on January 22nd. Defense and rebounding have been bright spots for coach Darran Miller’s team. “Team defense, we’ve just done a tremendous job of helping each other out and limiting teams to one shot. We’ve done a really good job of boxing out. Those have definitely been positive things on that side of the court.”
East Union comes into the contest at 5-15, they went winless in Pride of Iowa Conference play. “We have to come out ready to play. With postseason play it’s one and done. You can’t overlook teams and you have to take it game by game.”
Aleah Hermansen and Jaci Christensen lead the team in most categories, but a lot of role players have made major contributions. The supporting cast includes Kodie Sporrer, Kaitlin Nielsen, Johanna Sauers, Kate Tessman, Kali Irlmeier, and Sienna Albertsen. “Kodie’s role has been defense, she’s done a great job of guarding people. We’ve put her on the opposing team’s best player the last several games and she’s done a really good job. Kaitlin has done a good job offensively. Her three pointers have really improved and that’s been huge for us to have a third scorer. Johanna has done a really good job rebounding and she has some moves on offense if Jaci gets double teamed she can score. Kate is a three point threat and Kali has been a backup post giving us some time if people get in foul trouble and Sienna has given other girls a break.”
Thursday’s winner plays Tuesday in Audubon against either Glidden-Ralston or Coon Rapids-Bayard.
