(Avoca) Sole possession of first place in the Western Iowa Conference boys basketball standings is on the line Tuesday night when AHSTW hosts Treynor.
It’s one of the biggest games AHSTW has hosted in a long time. Head coach GG Harris says, “Yeah, pretty big…Things are still wide open in the WIC, you’re going into postseason play here in about 2-3 weeks, so you could say a lot of implications out there…You want to say it’s like any other game, but it’s competitive teams that want to win. We want to prove that we are really good and can compete with the best.”
The Vikings beat the Cardinals 76-73 in their prior matchup. “We played really well for two and half to three quarters at their place. We are still looking for consistency, but the biggest area we’ve grown is when we are up, how do you close out and finish without making it so close.”
Depth of the bench is an area AHSTW has progressed throughout the year. “Jace Peterson really was the lone guy coming off the bench early in the season and he’s solidified that sixth man role. He just loves it and provides us a huge spark. JJ Madsen has come in and he enjoys doing the dirty work. He doesn’t need to be in the stat line, he likes to play defense, rebound, and get other people the ball.”
Brayden Lund, Raydden Grobe, and Kyle Sternberg all average between 16 and 19 points per game for the Vikings. Grobe scored 37 when these teams played in Treynor on December 15th. AHSTW is 9-1 in the conference and Treynor is 11-1.
