(Area) Limited ice fishing activity took place in the month of December and now a blanket of snow will hinder ice development.
Locations with enough safe ice may be hard to come by. Fisheries Biologist Bryan Hayes says, “I would advise a lot of caution out there. We did start to see some activity. I got out to look for some potential places earlier in the week ahead of the snow and what I found was real variable ice conditions.”
For example, Littlefield ranged from 2-5″ of ice. Tuesday’s snowstorm didn’t do anglers any favors. “A person would really need to be cautions if they venture out. Now there is a bunch of snow on that ice adding weight and hiding the ice. You really have to be careful if you go out.”
Hayes says the best advice is to go somewhere that you’ve seen activity and check the ice thickness often. Four inches of good, clear ice is the recommendation for ice fishing.
