(Atlantic) John Mayhall scored 19-points, and Mitchell Badding scored 14-points to lead Kuemper past Atlantic, 56-53, in a boys’ basketball game at Atlantic on Tuesday night.
Ethan Williams came off the bench to lead the Trojans with 16-points, and Garrett Reynolds added 11.
Atlantic led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. Craig Alan Becker and Ethan Williams paced the offense with six points each.
Kuemper rebounded with 19-second quarter points while holding the Trojans to 11. The Trojans lost one of their leading scorers, Skylar Handlos, to injury in the first half, and Kuemper guard John Mayhall found his groove with 16-first half points, including four baskets from behind the three-point line.
The Trojans clawed their way back into the game in the second half and pulled within three points late in the game. Ethan Sturm knocked down two-three point baskets, and the elder brother, Grant, splashed one long-range shot giving the home team a chance to win. Kuemper responded by hitting five-of-six free throws down the stretch to secure the 56-53 win.
Grant Sturm finished the night with nine points, Craig Alan Becker 8, Ethan Sturm, 6, and Dayton Templeton tossed in three points for Atlantic.
Blake Pottebaum came off the bench and scored 10-points for Kuemper, Dawson Edwards, 6, Isaac Evans, 4, and Noah Bauer pitched in 3 points.
The Trojans, idled by COVID-19 issues this past week, went 10-25 from the free-throw line.
Atlantic falls to 1-2 on the season. Kuemper evens its’ record at 2-2.
