(Area) Things are starting to perk up for pheasant hunting. Warmer than normal temperatures at the start of the season led to a slow start, but conditions are improving.
Bryan Hayes of the Iowa DNR reports there are a lot of birds out there. “As you recall our bird counts were up. They were up slightly in the Southwest region, but there are about nine regions where the bird count exceeded 20 birds per route. It’s been a long time since we’ve had that many birds in the state.”
It’s the highest figure since 2007. “Good bird hunting. Especially now that the weather has changed. If you are a pheasant hunter hunting behind a dog you don’t want it 70 degrees and dry. That’s not good conditions to hunt and to find birds.”
The pheasant season opened on October 31st and runs through January 10th.
