(Area) Fewer COVID-19 restrictions as we hit summer travel season could lead to a dangerous trend on roadways.
Mark Peterson of the Minnesota/Iowa AAA identifies a trend they’ve found. “If you look at one of our neighbors to the north fatal crashes are going up in Minnesota. The other thing that’s going up is people driving in excess of 100 miles per hour.”
Experts haven’t been able to put a finger on why the speeds are increasing so much. “It’s kind of a mystery. I talked to some people in the traffic safety of Iowa and we are tying to come up with some ideas to correct it. Maybe it’s just a little more open road, but people in Minnesota and Iowa are travelling, many times too fast.”
According to the Iowa DOT there had been 95 traffic fatalities in the state this year as of June 8th.
