(Maryville) Northwest Missouri State junior forward Ryan Hawkins has been named the MIAA men’s basketball athlete of the week for the fourth time this season. It is the ninth time this season that a Bearcat men’s basketball player has earned the league’s weekly top honor.
Hawkins (Atlantic, Iowa) averaged 24.5 points per game and 9.0 rebound per game in leading Northwest to two victories that capped an 18-1 run through the MIAA.
Hawkins scored 25 points and tallied eight rebounds in a 92-69 win at Missouri Western. Hawkins shot 9-of-17 from the field and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Hawkins added 24 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double in Northwest’s 69-61 home win over Washburn. Hawkins went 9-of-9 at the free throw line and added five steals as the Bearcats completed a perfect home season at 16-0.
The No. 1-ranked Bearcats (28-1 overall, 18-1 MIAA) will head to Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City this week for the 2020 MIAA Tournament. As the No. 1 seed, Northwest will take on the winner of the No. 8 Central Oklahoma vs. No. 9 Lincoln game on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the first of four quarterfinal matchups. The semifinal is set for Saturday at 6 p.m.. The title game will be played Sunday at 3:15 p.m. The Bearcats have won four consecutive MIAA Tournament championships.
