(Red Oak) Atlantic and Red Oak square off in a girl’s regional semi-final basketball game at Red Oak tonight.
The two teams are quite familiar with each other. Red Oak, (19-3), defeated the (9-13), Trojans twice during the regular season, by the scores of 56-41 and 66-31.
Red Oak averages 63-points per game offensively. But perhaps the most impressive statistic is the Tigers stingy defense allowing the opposition to just 43.9 points per game. Chloe Johnson leads the team in rebounds with 149, 83 of those rebounds came on the defensive end.
Sophie Walker who’s missed the last four games because of an injury leads the team in scoring averaging 15-4 points per game. However, Ellie Rengstorf has picked the slack in Walker’s absence. The senior is averaging 20-points per game over the past four outings including a 31-point scoring night against Shenandoah in the Tigers Regional quarterfinal win over Shenandoah.
Meanwhile, Atlantic is making its first trip to a regional semi-final for the first time since 2016. “The first post-season game we wanted to get to 1-0, and now we want to get to 2-0,” said Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason. “Obviously when you’ve lost to a team twice in one season you can get different responses from the players. But our girls are excited about a third chance. They don’t feel like they played well the first two times and they want to make a run for it.”
The Trojans average 50.2 points per game offensively while allowing the opposition to 57.5 points per contest. Haley Rasmussen leads the team in scoring with 17.2 points per game. Senior point guard Mckenzie Waters averages 12.3 points per game. The tandem also leads the team in steals. Rasmussen with 84 and Mckenzie Waters has 53. Corri Pelzer leads the team in rebounding with 111, and Taylor McCreedy has 83.
The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. KS95.7 will broadcast the game this evening. The pre-game starts at 6:45.
